Happy 4th of July!! I hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday. We spent a quiet day at home, just the 4 of us. My Mum has been under the weather for the past few days, so she stayed home today – all truth be told, I didn’t want Strep Throat – so she stayed home and got some much needed rest. We just hung out at home, the kids did their thing and I test cut some of the upcoming products for August and played with my planner. We didn’t go out to see any fireworks this evening as people in our neighborhood are letting them off and it’s freaking Molly, our American Bully pup, out. She’s currently curled up in her bed hiding. Hank, our American Bulldog, could careless and is laid at my feet sleeping.
Since we were home today I decided to make one of the kids favorites for dinner. BBQ Ribs. Our family loves ribs. We have even been on a “quest” (this was the kids idea) to find the best ribs in our local area. I believe Friday’s won that honor and this recipe is similar to their ribs. They are fork tender but have that crispy outer edge that is the best part of ribs! The kids are now convinced that my ribs are the best in town.
I when I first cooked ribs I wanted something that was easy, as grilling or smoking ribs seemed like such a daunting task. Throwing them in the slow-cooker and letting it do the hard work and then broiling them once they are done has been the perfect, easy way of achieving “the best ribs”.
Cooking ribs this way is so easy, I have even made ribs on a baseball or band night. I’ve just done the broiling step once we’ve come home while making, or getting the sides from the fridge. They really aren’t as intimidating as I first thought!
I typically buy ribs when they are on sale. Depending on the sale, I’ll buy more than one and freeze the other for another meal. I typically buy the St. Louis Style ribs, but this would be just as amazing on the Country Style or bone out ribs as well.

- 3 lbs St. Louis Style Pork Ribs
- 3 Tbsp uncooked quick oats more if needed
- 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce more to taste if you prefer more sauce

- Remove ribs from packaging and rinse in cold water. Then cut the ribs to fit inside your crock pot. I typically cut mine in half and they fit just find inside my 6 Qt Slow-Cooker.
- Sprinkle/coat ribs with dry rub - I didn't actually measure how much dry rub, so you may need more or less than I wrote above. Add into slow-cooker and cook on low for 7-8 hours.
- Pre-heat oven to broil. Remove Ribs from slow-cooker and place on a broiling pan. I remove any bones at this point by just pulling them out with tongs. Brush ribs with BBQ sauce and place in the broiler for 7-10 minutes, or until browned and crispy on the outside.
